Best VPN Services for Different Privacy and Everyday Needs

No VPN is best for everyone. Privacy and security needs vary. We match verified provider documents, prices, features, and privacy disclosures to everyday needs. BestPickRadar did not independently benchmark speed or security. A VPN can improve connection privacy, but it cannot make you anonymous.

HOW THIS GUIDE WAS BUILT

Provider documents, clearly attributed

We separate provider-published information from our editorial interpretation, and state the limits of this comparison.

What we reviewed

We checked each provider’s current official plan, help, feature, privacy, and transparency materials on September 30, 2026. We compared privacy-policy transparency, independent audit scope, app and code transparency, protocols, platforms, device limits, pricing and renewals, free or trial access, refunds, documented security features, simplicity, advanced controls, and use-case fit. Product and privacy claims are attributed to their provider.

What we did not test

BestPickRadar did not run VPN speed benchmarks or test DNS, WebRTC, IP leaks, kill switches, streaming access, latency, server performance, or privacy behavior. We assign no scores and make no universal winner claim. “Best suited for” is an editorial interpretation of documented features and buyer constraints.

What VPN protection means

VPNs can encrypt traffic between a device and VPN server, conceal the user’s public IP from destination sites, and reduce exposure on untrusted networks. They do not make users fully anonymous, protect against all malware or phishing, stop tracking when logged into an account, guarantee streaming access, or change the law.

PROVIDER DETAILS

Seven services, different trade-offs

“Best suited for” describes an editorial match between documented features and a buyer need. It does not mean BestPickRadar tested or ranked the provider.

BEST SUITED FOR

NordVPN

Paid all-purpose use with plan bundles

NordVPN combines its VPN with optional bundles that add other security products. The Basic plan is the VPN-focused entry tier; higher tiers include additional products. Its live server list lets buyers check supported countries and specialty server types before a trip.

PLANS & PRICE
Basic and higher bundles are offered on monthly, 1-year, and 2-year terms. The 2-year page currently includes extra promotional months in some regions. Its displayed currency and offer depend on location; see the current first charge and renewal terms at checkout.
ACCESS & REFUND
No continuing free plan. Eligible paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. Check current trial eligibility by country and purchase channel.
DEVICES & PROTOCOLS
Up to 10 simultaneous devices. Provider lists NordLynx, OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPsec, with availability differing by platform and location. Its pricing page lists 225+ locations.
PRIVACY EVIDENCE
NordVPN says Deloitte Lithuania reviewed its no-logs policy under ISAE 3000 from November 10 to December 12, 2025, including server infrastructure, configurations, deployment processes, and privacy-related settings. The provider says the full report is account-only; this is a point-in-time assurance, not a guarantee of future behavior.

Check before choosing: Introductory billing is not the renewal price. Compare the renewal amount and bundle contents at checkout, and check which server locations and protocols are currently offered where you need them.

BEST SUITED FOR

Surfshark

Households with many VPN-connected devices

Surfshark’s unlimited simultaneous VPN connections can suit a household with more devices than a capped plan allows. Starter, One, and One+ bundle progressively more products, so compare the VPN-only need against the added services rather than treating each bundle as a VPN feature.

PLANS & PRICE
Starter, One, and One+ are offered on monthly, 12-month, and 24-month terms. The current US Starter offer includes 3 extra months: $67.23 for the first 27 months ($2.49/month equivalent); VAT may apply. The recurring amount depends on the plan and is stated in current checkout/terms—see current renewal terms.
ACCESS & REFUND
No continuing free VPN plan. New users can get a 7-day trial on 12- or 24-month plans (up to 3 devices); subscription charges begin after the trial. A 30-day money-back guarantee also applies.
DEVICES & PROTOCOLS
Unlimited simultaneous VPN connections (the provider notes different limits may apply to other bundled services). WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, and Dausos are listed. Surfshark currently lists 4,500+ servers across 100 countries.
PRIVACY EVIDENCE
Surfshark says Deloitte independently reviewed its no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025. Separately, Cure53 assessed the Dausos protocol architecture and cryptography in 2026. Those reports concern their stated systems and periods; neither establishes that the whole service is risk-free.

Check before choosing: A 24-month offer is charged upfront, even when shown as a monthly equivalent. Confirm its recurring price and whether any non-VPN bundle features are needed.

BEST SUITED FOR

ExpressVPN

A clear plan-based device limit and its Lightway protocol

ExpressVPN separates simultaneous device limits by Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro tiers. Its Lightway protocol is a distinguishing protocol option; plans also include other privacy/security products whose availability depends on the tier. Device and refund terms differ by purchase channel.

PLANS & PRICE
Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro are offered monthly, yearly, and as a 2-year introductory offer that renews annually. Current US Basic offer: $83.72 for the first 28 months ($2.99/month equivalent), then $99.95 annually. The checkout states each plan’s initial and renewal amount; confirm the offer for your region.
ACCESS & REFUND
No continuing free plan. A 3-day trial is limited to eligible mobile app subscriptions. First-time direct web purchases include a 30-day money-back guarantee; app-store terms differ.
DEVICES & PROTOCOLS
Basic supports 10, Advanced 12, and Express Pro 14 simultaneous VPN connections. Lightway is ExpressVPN’s proprietary protocol; available protocols vary by app. Its July 2026 update lists 214 locations across 113 countries.
PRIVACY EVIDENCE
ExpressVPN’s Trust Center links reports with distinct scopes. Its published history includes PwC’s review of privacy-policy compliance and TrustedServer in June 2019, a build-verification audit in June 2020, and later technical assessments. Read each report for the systems and period it covers; these do not establish that a VPN prevents every privacy risk.

Check before choosing: The 30-day money-back guarantee applies to eligible first-time direct purchases; subscriptions billed through Apple or Google use their store refund process. The app-store trial is not a permanent free plan.

BEST SUITED FOR

Proton VPN

A continuing free plan and public app code

Proton VPN is the only candidate here with a documented continuing Free plan. That tier supports one active connection and a limited, randomly selected set of server countries; paid Plus adds up to 10 connections and the provider’s paid network and streaming features. Proton also publishes its app source code and third-party audit links.

PLANS & PRICE
Proton Free, VPN Plus, and Proton Unlimited are listed; the provider presents paid plans as monthly, 1-year, and 2-year options. The dynamic pricing page did not expose reliable current numeric prices or renewal amounts in the research capture, so no paid price is stated here—see the live checkout for current regional terms.
ACCESS & REFUND
Ongoing Free plan with unlimited data and no ads. Paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee; this is not a trial.
DEVICES & PROTOCOLS
One active connection on Free; up to 10 on VPN Plus. Proton lists WireGuard; options depend on app and plan. Paid locations are listed in 140+ countries; Free connects to a limited set of 10 randomly selected countries.
PRIVACY EVIDENCE
Proton states that its released apps are open source and links independent app audits. Its latest no-logs update describes a 2026 Securitum assessment of production server infrastructure, including activity, DNS, traffic contents, and connection metadata. The audit is limited to its stated systems and period; open code and audits do not make a service risk-free.

Check before choosing: Free is a continuing plan, not a trial, but it has one active connection and restricted server selection. Paid feature and server access differ by plan; check current prices at checkout.

BEST SUITED FOR

Mullvad VPN

Flat-rate pricing and account-number signup

Mullvad uses a different purchase model: generate an account number, then top up for the period you want. Its official price is the same €5/month for short or longer top-ups, including VAT. This is a match for buyers prioritizing simple term pricing and an account flow that does not begin with an email field.

PLANS & PRICE
One flat rate: €5 per month including VAT, whether paying month-to-month or topping up for a year. The provider displays currency equivalents and offers a 14-day refund except for cash payments. No free plan or trial is offered.
ACCESS & REFUND
No free plan or trial. 14-day money-back guarantee, except cash payments.
DEVICES & PROTOCOLS
Up to 5 devices per account. Mullvad apps use WireGuard. Its live server directory currently lists 50 countries; check exact city availability before travel.
PRIVACY EVIDENCE
Mullvad says account creation asks for no name, password, or email and generates a numbered account identifier. It publishes audits of specific components, including app and account/payment systems. These separate reviews do not attest to every part of the service or future operation.

Check before choosing: There is no free tier and the device limit is five. Cash payments are excluded from the 14-day refund; check accepted payment methods and exact server availability before paying.

BEST SUITED FOR

CyberGhost VPN

Plan-labeled streaming servers and longer refunds on longer terms

CyberGhost exposes server choices organized for particular uses, including streaming-oriented server lists. This can help people who prefer provider-labeled starting points, but server labels do not guarantee that a particular streaming service will work. The monthly and longer plans also have different refund windows.

PLANS & PRICE
The current US offer lists 1 month at $12.99/month; 6 months at $6.99/month billed $41.94 every 6 months; and 2 years plus 2 months at $2.19/month equivalent, billed $56.94 for the first 26 months and then $56.94 yearly. Taxes may apply; offers and local prices vary.
ACCESS & REFUND
No continuing free plan. Trial: 24 hours on Windows/macOS, 3 days on Android, or 7 days on iOS; mobile trials require a payment method. Refund: 45 days on 6-month and longer plans, 14 days monthly.
DEVICES & PROTOCOLS
Up to 7 connected devices. CyberGhost lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. Its pricing page lists 100 server countries; its directory includes streaming-labeled locations, but access is not guaranteed.
PRIVACY EVIDENCE
CyberGhost says Deloitte Audit Romania completed a third audit in 2025 under ISAE 3000 (Revised), examining VPN server configuration, change management, incident-response controls, and the token-based Dedicated IP system against its no-logs policy. This is a provider-reported audit of stated systems, not a claim of perfect privacy.

Check before choosing: The 45-day refund period applies to the longer plans shown; the monthly plan has 14 days. The displayed monthly equivalent is billed upfront for its first 26-month term, not each month.

BEST SUITED FOR

Private Internet Access (PIA)

Many devices and open-source apps

PIA documents unlimited simultaneous VPN connections and open-source apps, which may suit buyers with many devices who also want inspectable client code. Its website lists monthly, annual, and multi-year subscriptions. The provider also publishes a Deloitte no-logs report and transparency information; these are evidence to inspect rather than a promise of absolute privacy.

PLANS & PRICE
Current US page: $11.95 monthly; a 1-year term is $47.88 for the first year and renews at $47.88/year; a 3-year plus 3-month offer is shown as $2.03/month equivalent and renews every 3 years at $79. Its first total is not clearly stated on that page, so confirm checkout and applicable taxes.
ACCESS & REFUND
No continuing free plan. Eligible new Android Google Play annual subscriptions may include a 7-day trial. Direct purchases have a 30-day money-back guarantee; app-store and some third-party purchases use different refund rules.
DEVICES & PROTOCOLS
Unlimited simultaneous connections. PIA lists OpenVPN and WireGuard, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Its directory shows 91 countries, including virtual locations where the server may be physically hosted elsewhere.
PRIVACY EVIDENCE
PIA states that its apps are open source and links a Deloitte no-logs report. It also points to court proceedings in which it says it could not provide activity logs. These are provider-linked historical evidence with report and case-specific scope; they do not guarantee future service behavior.

Check before choosing: The 30-day money-back guarantee is for eligible new users; Apple/Google store subscriptions and specified third-party/gift-card purchases use different refund rules. Read the conditions before purchase.

CHOOSE BY NEED

Which VPN may fit your situation?

These are starting points based on provider-documented plan terms and features. Check platform support, availability, and current terms for your country before deciding.

Need a continuing free tier

Proton VPN lists a Free plan with one active connection and limited server selection.

Have many household devices

Surfshark and PIA list unlimited simultaneous VPN connections; compare their pricing, apps, and renewal terms.

Prefer flat term pricing

Mullvad lists the same €5 monthly rate for monthly and yearly top-ups, with a five-device limit.

Want provider-labeled streaming locations

CyberGhost lists streaming-labeled locations. Labels do not guarantee access to a particular service.

Want to compare protocol and tier choices

ExpressVPN lists Lightway and separates device limits across Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro.

Considering a long introductory offer

Compare the full initial charge with renewal amount and frequency for NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and PIA.

What a VPN does and does not do

A VPN can improve connection privacy

It encrypts traffic between your device and its VPN server, hides your public IP from destination sites, reduces local exposure on untrusted networks, and can change your apparent network location. The VPN operator becomes part of your trust chain.

A VPN has limits

It does not make you fully anonymous, prevent tracking while logged in, stop phishing or malware, guarantee streaming access or privacy from every party, or make unlawful activity lawful. Keep using HTTPS, software updates, and ordinary account precautions.

BEFORE YOU SUBSCRIBE

Pricing, free access and what to check

Proton VPN offers an ongoing free plan. A free trial is time-limited, while a money-back guarantee requires a paid purchase and an eligible refund request. • Full amount charged for the first term
  • Renewal amount and how often it renews
  • Refund window and purchase-channel exceptions

COMMON QUESTIONS

VPN services FAQ

Quick answers about VPN privacy, free plans, pricing and what provider claims can and cannot establish.

What is a VPN?

A VPN creates an encrypted connection from your device to a VPN server. The destination typically sees the server’s public IP, while your VPN provider becomes part of the trust chain for that connection.

Which of these VPNs has a continuing free plan?

Proton VPN lists a continuing Free plan with unlimited data, no ads, and one active device. It has limited server selection. A money-back guarantee is a refund condition on a paid plan, not a continuing free service.

Can a VPN make me anonymous?

No. A VPN can hide your public IP from destination sites and protect traffic between your device and the VPN server, but account logins, cookies, browser fingerprinting, and other identifiers can still link activity.

Can a VPN improve privacy on public Wi-Fi?

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its VPN server, which can reduce exposure on an untrusted local network. Keep HTTPS, software updates, and normal phishing precautions; a VPN does not protect against every threat.

Can VPN providers see my traffic?

The provider routes your traffic, so it can observe some connection information. HTTPS encrypts content between your browser and a website, but provider visibility depends on the traffic, app, and service design. Read each provider’s privacy policy and audit scope.

What does a no-logs claim mean?

It is a provider’s statement about what data it says it does not retain. An independent review can assess particular systems and a particular period; read its scope and date, and do not treat it as a guarantee of future behavior.

Can a VPN guarantee access to streaming services?

No. Streaming platforms may restrict VPN traffic, and availability can vary by service, server, country, and time. Provider server labels or marketing do not guarantee access; check platform terms and the provider’s current guidance.

Why does renewal pricing differ from the first offer?

Introductory promotions apply for a stated initial term. Many VPN subscriptions then renew at another amount or frequency. Compare the first charge and renewal notice at checkout, and check how to cancel before renewal.
